David Juaire is our gallery's Vermont Life photographer. For the past 28 years, David has published in Vermont's leading scenic magazine. This past year he had nine pictures published by Vermont Life; in 2010 he had five, and several have been centerfolds. At the reception on February 5th, he will have a photo album of over two dozen photos he has had in their various calendars over the years. He has also had nearly 80 photos in Coop Fire Insurance calendars.

In addition to presentations by our two AIR practicing artists, Sunday's Open House (January 8th from 1-4PM) will feature art work by sixteen student artists in addition to pencil drawings by high school history teacher, James Ouellette, of Enosburg High School, who is currently taking drawing classes from Rebecca Anne Bennett at her Blue Crayon Studio in the rear of the AIR Gallery.

Jim Ouellette says, "taking the classes has made me much more observant about color and line. I have since pretty much restricted myself to the pencil. My colored drawing of an adobe mission (below) was based on a drawing in an art book."

Student Artists: Art instructor Pat Murphy explains, "This student show has become a tradition at the [AIR] Gallery. Local High School Art Teachers from Enosburg and Richford showcase examples of the high quality art work being produced. The work includes drawing in various media, painting, and sculpture. "Most objects a woodturner produces tend to be round or circular. I am trying to break that barrier by working with chunks of wood that are square, rectangular, or irregular in shape. During the turning process, I make cuts and re-examine the project and often change my mind about the final piece several times. One of the exciting aspects of working with wood is that you never know what you will get until you cut into it. This can result in beautifully figured grain or a knot that will fall out leaving a big hole. These elements can significantly direct the outcome of a piece.

"My new series of platters give the illusion that the wood is bent over a form to create a subtle curve. They are in fact, turned. The four corners of the platter reach upwards to slightly different heights and angles which creates irregular movement within the pieces. I tend to leave the natural edge on at least on side of the platter; this gives the pieces a subtle rustic feel while the rest of the work is smooth and modern in design. I enjoy working with the interplay of rustic and modern."

Sharon's venture into making polymer clay jewelry began in 2004. A career working in the fashion industry in Montreal gave her an appreciation for 'wearable art.' The versatility of working with polymer clay allows her to make brilliantly colored, one of a kind jewelry to wear, enhancing any garment. Using the clay as her focus, she complements the colors with the use of crystals, metals, and gemstones. For the most part, she is self-taught but workshops with well-known polymer clay artists Tori Hughes, Kathleen Dustin, Grant Diffendaffer, and Myriam Bardoul have allowed her to expand her horizons and perfect her techniques.

"Very early one morning I was taking my kids and my dog out for a walk. I saw a little squirrel crossing the street and I squealed: 'Look at the little squirrel wearing a hat!' Of course, it wasn't, but I kept thinking about how cute it would have been if it was. I knew I could crochet a tiny little hat for the squirrel, but I just couldn't figure out how I'd get it on the squirrel. However, if I made my own little squirrel out of wool, I could make a hat and force the animal to wear it without fear of rabies. So, that's what I did. Only, I made a rabbit, and I gave it a mohawk and a carrot tattoo.

Marcia Hagwood is a potter, goat and chicken farmer, hand spinner, and natural soap maker. Her current work in pottery focuses on forms built with a variety of construction techniques and tools in addition to her potters wheel. She will exhibit several new jewelry and treasure boxes this month. Also, just in time for the holidays, she will introduce several new seasonal soaps.

"For me, painting is a meditation; the physical act of applying paint to the canvas with a brush (or fingers), moving paint, mixing colors, playing with sculpting the image. It's a balancing act keeping the finished painting in mind while letting go enough to get there. This is having you cake and eating it, too. Painting with friends, plein air or figure drawing is another joy on this journey and the icing on the cake!"

Alison Dezotelle can be found picking up rocks, seed casings, lichen and twisted sticks on her walks in the woods and along streams and rivers in and around Northern Vermont.
Recently inspired by the depth and layers of history in her trip to East Germany this year, she has decided that elves and trolls may indeed exist, and has created faces of polymer clay embedded and emerging from the twisted pieces of trees and roots which she has amassed in her cramped, windowless basement studio. 'I have studied the work of northern European doll makers and am inspired by their unique approach to features and dress,' said Dezotelle between mouthfuls of salted peanuts and chocolate fudge.
Another facet of her work is the cloth dolls she has spent the year working on. Dezotelle has collected fine fabrics from various small fabric stores in Vermont, Connecticut, and Leipzig, Germany (she thinks nothing of accosting women in airports when she sees something made in a fabric she covets). In making the dolls, she tears apart fine linens and silks, creating a contrasting dress of fine material on a simply designed doll. These creations are inspired by doll makers from France and England, and by couturiers worldwide. The dolls continue to evolve as her collection grows.

"In recent work, I have been continuing to develop my technique of supersaturating the paper and applying multiple washes of color (usually 15-20) to create depth of light and color in the background. I am also experimenting with different ways to apply and then remove watercolor to create the subject matter. The ink-work, too, is being further developed-- I recently discovered 'Rotring,' a new pen system produced in Germany that is by far the best ink pen I have ever used. These developing techniques and improved tools really help to keep the artistry and excitement alive, and keep me motivated to continue exploring our landscape."

Sharon Fiske has been a local resident for more that twenty years and her interest in painting began when she moved to the area. She paints primarily in oils, but also enjoys acrylic and watercolors. She enjoys painting all subject matter, but has a passion for history that extends into her art. Sharon's favorite subjects are Primitive Portraits, Theorems, and Reverse Glass Painting, which dates back to the 1700's. Sharon describes herself as a woman with a bright eye who loves her palette to include vivid colors.

"Making art is what I do and defines who I am. Earthenware clay is my medium of choice, throwing on the wheel or rolling slabs for tiles or mirrors. Over the past year, I have developed a style of stamping/applique decoration on many of my pots. In this show, I have a couple of pieces with scraffito and wax resist designs. Inspiration often comes from other artists as well as the beauty of the Vermont landscape. My seemingly chaotic studio is my refuge as is the forest outside it's door. I can't imagine not making pots..."

"Trees and vines are an endless source of fascination for me. Their branches can be complicated and messy, yet they remain elegant, like the frozen movements of a dance. I paint the birds around me. In Vermont, birds are jewels, shimmering amidst the gray branches, floating on blue-gray water, or hidden in the dense greenery. In the South, they are large and flamboyant and everywhere. I am know as a watercolorist, but I also paint in oils and acrylics. I strive for a sense of mysetery, sometimes even surrealism, in my work.

"I'm a retired Forestry Professor who began making oval bentwood boxes about 5 years ago. I started by making a set of Shaker boxes for my wife, and now I find myself making and selling a wide array of Shaker bentwood items, ranging from boxes and carriers to bureau trays and pincushions. Over the last year or so I have been experimenting with Norwegian style bentwood boxes (called a Tine; pronounced TEE-nah) and sculpted trays. While shaker boxes have their iconic, almost mathematical elegance, the Norwegian items have more of a rugged, individualistic theme that seems befitting their Viking heritage-- a theme that definitely challenges my less well developed right hemisphere."

"Not much to say-- the erratic weather this year led me to spend as much time in my garden as possible when the sun was out! Therefore my studio was not visited too often until the end of last month. "I have been working in fiber arts, specifically 1960's style tie-dyed creations, since about 1998; the last 6 years here in Northern Vermont under the name Blue Moon Designs. Everybody is probably familiar with the rainbow spiral and other well known designs from the 60's, commonly connected with the 'hippies' of that era, which are the basis of my repertoire. As much as I enjoy doing these designs, lately I have been playing around with non-traditional colors and color combinations as well as more advanced tie-dye techniques including the Japanese technique called Shibori.
"Recently I have been experimenting with dye applications that don't necessarily require tying. These include direct application of dye with squirt bottles, eye-droppers, paintbrushes and basically any other way I can think of applying dye to fabric. As you might imagine working with these new processes I have had some successful and other not so successful results. One combination that has been really popular is my version of camouflage. Imagine that with as many hunters as we have here in the Enosburg area. As I have mentioned before in my AIR information but have yet to actually perfect, I would like to work more at learning the techniques for tying Mandalas, Stars and other figure oriented designs. Hopefully I will get that done this year."

Frank is retired and now resides in Franklin, Vermont with his wife Priscilla. Nowadays, his time is spent fishing on Lake Carmi, bird hunting with their dogs, Patches and Maggie, and devoting more time to his passion for art. Frank custom frames the majority of his artwork using local hard and soft woods. Current art work includes a 24x34 inch oil-on-canvas of two Quebec Labrador Caribou. He is also working on an oil-on-canvas of a Mountain Caribou. And last but not least, the Grizzly Bear.

Working out of his home studio, Hank has amassed over 200 paintings! He sketches from life or using photographs. "I became interested in quilting after seeing a play about pioneer women and their quilts. Over the past thirty years of taking classes and workshops, my style has evolved into making fairly traditional quilts, but with a touch of whimsy. "Hand-spun wool, silk blends, organic cotton, angora merino and baby alpaca are just a few of the fiber types found in my personal 'candy store' of yarns; formerly referred to as a spare bedroom. I find that today's fibers are much easier to work with on a wooden needle rather than aluminum, steel or plastic. Bamboo is my preference, simply because of the way it feels in my hands. Much like an artist and a favorite paint brush. Just like the yarn, I've lost count of the number of straight, double-pointed, and circular needles of every size stashed in those Rubbermaid tubs and dresser drawers! Knitting is therapeutic for me. It provides instant gratification while at the same time, providing a one-of-a-kind, unique, hand-knit fashion statement for years to come. "For the most part, I do not do a lot of planning in what I paint. I ordinarily begin by washing in things --ideas-- just to get past an intimidating blank canvas. Then I will apply paint, and then I take some of the paint back. At the same time, I am thinking about form, angles, color and line. I let the paint lead me. I usually overpaint several times until eventually dominant images appear and theme for the composition emerges. In the end, it may require different layers of glazes, etc. to bring the piece to a whole. It's not a process I am particularly delighted with as it appears to bring out something stored within that can be unpredictable and scary. I am now thinking on moving on to traditional landscapes. More planning and enjoying and peace of mind. We do live in a very beautiful part of the state."

"My fascination with art began at a very young age. While growing up in Hanover, NH I was priviledged to take art and pottery lessons. I attended the University of Vermont, earning a B.A. with Art as a major. My focus at that time ws solely pottery. In recent years, my creative energies have vacillated among watercolor and acrylic painting, photography, basketry, book-making and most recently, fiber arts. I love the interplay of colors and textures, and the challenges of form and function that this medium brings. The forms of the arts are influenced by my present home environment in Northern Vermont. I have always had a love of nature and realize a deep need for beings amongst the wonders of our Earth. During my recent trip to China, I saw ancient pottery, temples and pagodas. Their features definitely influenced my latest pieces. I wish that those viewing my works will find them whimsical, rustic yet elegant, functional yet decorative."

"My small sculpted panels are done for pleasure and fun. I began doing them years ago as whimsical gifts, then sold through shops; then I got busily into the realm of murals, and the panels were set aside for awhile. A year ago I moved to Shelburne, Vermont, (to which I have been a biennial visitor for twenty-five years) and felt the inclination to take them up again. I use a combination of paper-mache and air-dry clay on an armature."

Art teacher at Richford Jr./Sr. High School, Pas has been involved with the gallery since the beginning. He studied in both America and England and now works primarily in oils. The new work uses ideas, songs, stories and memories of people and place to create paintings that we might feel but not necessarily see. As he sees it, "It's a new approach for me. One that I've been trying to get at for years. I want to use personal and collective memories of small town America as a springboard for talking about our lives."

New AIR feature: Open House Monthly Art Raffle

At the May Open House we began a new tradition of a monthly raffle, where each time one artist will voluntarily donate an object to be raffled off: Tickets to sell for $1 each or six for $5. Jan Brodky set up and conducted this event and reports raising $100 for the gallery treasury in raffling off on of Toby Fulwiler's cherry wooden bowls with spoon last month. The winner of the first raffle was Charles Henderson from Montgomery Center. Photographer David Juaire will donate the above photograph to be raffled off at the June Open House.

"A native Vermonter, I was born and raised in St. Albans. With help and encouragement from my high school art teacher, I decided to move to Manchester, NH to study art. With a B.A. in Commercial Art, I found myself moving toward the fine arts. As my kids go older, I continued to pursue watercolor, and a few years later, oils. In the mid-eighties, I became a member of the Manchester Art Association, and the New Hampshire Art Association. I have exhibited paintings in several juried art show, winning some awards. In the summer of 2006, I moved back to my home town and continued to follow my passion for painting. I am now a member of the St. Albans Art Guild, as well as of AIR."

Nancy Hayden is an artist, writer, organic farmer and engineering professor living in northern Vermont with degrees in English, Studio Art, Biology and Engineering. Last year, she did a residency at the Vermont Studio Center focusing on sculpture and altered art. NANCY PATCH REFLECTS ON FIVE YEARS

Nancy Patch has stepped aside from her position as Executive Director of Artist in Residence. When the gallery was first established, her plan was to direct the gallery for 5 years, and she has met this expectation. Her several responsibilities will be delegated to different board members and she will remain active in the gallery for the next year, continuing to arrange the gallery display each month. Many thanks to Nancy, without whose imagination and energy the gallery would neve have existed.

"To all the artists, sponsors, and members of AIR: I have decided to step down as volunteer executive director starting this membership year. I had let several of you know that this would happen at the end of our fifth year, but I felt that the transition will take some time and if I really want to pull out at the end of year 5, then I will need to start that process now. The idea of the gallery began in the Spring fo 2006 when a space was open in the proposed New building. I had asked Andy Broderick of Housing VT to hold the spot for a couple of weeks while I hashed out an idea. He never thought it would actually come about, but I thought the idea of a co-operative gallery was a good one and so we rallied a small group of artists to get things started. I had decided even then that I would give this effort five years to see if it could make a go then would probably move on to something else. It has now been five years and seems to be a good time to start the transition. We have delegated the work that I have been doing across the different board members, though I will remain working in the gallery once a month until the new membership year.

"Please look at the schedule to see when you might want to come in for training. For this year, I will also continue to arrange the gallery for the new featured artists each month. I will also be available to answer questions and to assist the board members when asked. As always, you can count on Rebecca to meet you daily needs and concerns. Karen Scheffler has taken on the job of membership coordinator and scheduling (2011-12 is already done), Jan Brosky has agreed to be treasurer and to take on payments and expenses. Alison Dezotelle will be handling the advertising.

"I have experienced great joy in helping this effort of bringing art into the community, but mostly it gave me something I had not anticipated. "My oil paintings originate from photographs. I look for ordinary subject matter to see 'the usual in an unusual way.' Color decisions are exciting and Photoshop is my sketchpad and playground. I digitally manipulate and adjust the color until I'm satisfied. Sometimes I spend more hours digitally adjusting the color in the photos than I do painting the finished work. I want the viewer to rethink our common, everyday scenes/objects and taste them as a new color flavor. Six year ago, I turned fifty and decided to show my work publicly. Nancy Stone is a Williston, Vermont painter, book artist and art teacher. She is a member of the Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, Northern Vermont Artists Association, the Vermont Crafts Council, and a Signature member of the Vermont Watercolor Society. Her acrylic and watercolor paintings have received numberous awards, including 2005's Juror's Award at the Vermont Watercolor Society and the 2006 "Grand Prize" at the Champlain Valley Exposition. At the Northern Vermont Artists' Association juried show, she received the 2008 watercolor award and 2009 Mary Bryan Award.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT: "Tension is a welcome partner in my creative process. Artwork is often launched with abandon as pigment is playfully pushed or poured to the point of losing control over the subject and composition. Maintaining that abstract under-painting, areas are then adjusted and edges are suggested, creating a balance between definition and nuance. Hopefully, this results in a painting that is powerful from a distance yet fascinating up close. My focus is less about 'what' is painted than it is about 'how' it is painted.

Watercolor is a favorite medium since it allows intentional accidents and varied color dynamics. Acrylic collage is an alternative choice. At other times, I feel the need to manipulate paper and thread so I create sculptural artists' books. These demand exploration of art techniques that best integrate with the theme and invoke change over time as pages turn and scrolls unfurl. The swing between various media prompts altered comfort levels and adventurous problem solving.

Art has been core to my life, remaining so throughout my teaching career and during my years as Art Program Director of the Children's Art Exchange between Soviet and American children. During this wild ride called 'retirement,' I intentionally select activities that are arts based: singing in a choir, ushering at the Flynn Center and St. Michael's Playhouse, teaching and making art. Six years ago, I co-founded the Book Arts Guild of VT, which now has over 300 members. During summer, I am the art teacher for Kids4Peace, a camp that brings together Muslim, Jewish, and Christian children from Palestine, Jerusalem and Vermont; it is a project that combines my passions: children and peace through art. I find joy equally in creating my own art, as well as encouraging others."

Although my aprons have been popular, my handbags are my favorite-- where it all started. This season I have especially enjoyed working with repurposed clothing; pre-loved, if you will. The suitbags are all one of a kind, each with a distinction all their own. I have also enjoyed expanding my handmade polymer clay button collection and have added working with fusible plastic to create unique jewelry pieces. "I have been creating whimsical paper mache sculptures for a few years. It is a fun medium to work in because anything is possible! I start with wire, brown paper, and masking tape, and sculpt the paper into my vision. Sometimes the vision changes as I progress. I cover the sculpture with 3 layers of paper mache, then I'm ready to paint. I love to paint in bright colors and designs similar to the Oaxacan designs of Mexico.
"I also enjoy sewing scarves from patches of rayon cloth that I pick up from a recycling store. Creating art has been a part of my life since I was very young. I enjoy dabbling in a variety of mediums and am always willing to try something new. I have been teaching art in the school setting for 18 years and am currently teaching at Bakersfield Elementary School."

"I hadn't been able to always create the look that I wanted with my previous methods of jewelry making, and I eventually decided that I was going to have to add another element to my work. So, over the past year, I added sterling silver wire to my necklaces. I tried for a long time to make clay look like rocks. Then I decided I should just be using rocks. It turned out not to be quite that easy. Alison Dubilier and I worked on and off for years to develop a technique to work in the way that we wanted. Learning to use sterling silver wire was the last step that I needed to be able to make the rock pendants that I'd been trying to make for years. I love the simplicity of the rock and the silver together and also the contrast with the beads. I spend a lot of time working with yarn. This year I worked on a series of hats inspired by the sentiment of the mullet. They embody the 'business in the front, party in the back' idea, but they do so stylishly."

Alison Dezotelle, as a young girl growing up in southwestern Connecticut, spent her time in fields behind her house pretending she was a lost princess from a Grimm's fairy tale. Since then, she has pursued a life of drawing, illustrating, painting, and most recently making polymer and cloth art dolls. The human figure has always been prominent in her art, be it life drawing, clothing a person or sculpting a face and hands. Combining a love of fabric with a love of drawing, as well as a warped sense of humor, Alison has come up with doll designs that continue to evolve as new ideas emerge.

Kasia first became interested in metalwork in college at UVM; she then landed an internship her senior year at a metal shop in Burlington, Vermont called Metalworks, Inc. There she interned for a year, then she was hired on and is still employed today. Many of her materials come from the recycling bins at the shop. Kasia's love of metal work has brought her down many different avenues of creativity, working with a wide array of materials including steel, stainless steel, and copper. "Last April, I was a resident at the Vermont Studio Center for sculpture. My medium-- books! I cut, sewed, drilled, glued, painted, and filled them. At the Burlington Art Hop this past September, I showed six pieces that I had started at the VSC, but finished this past summer. I also attended a few meetings of the Vermont Book Arts Guild and came up with altered art and altered book ideas to last a lifetime. One of the sculptural pieces I am showing at AIR this winter is an altered book piece called 'Body of Knowledge.' Little by little people are turning themselves into machines, incapable of thinking and caring for themselves without the direction of some outside specialist. This piece, built from encyclopedias I found at the dump, is about the need to look inside of ourselves to find the wisdom and understanding inherent in our own bodies and psyche. This piece is interactive, and all the books open to an inner space that is sometimes dark and scary, sometimes joyful, fun, and wise. Another piece called 'Old and New' is made from a 1940's piece of linen (from my Great Aunt's upholstery scraps) with bean pods sewed on. Besides altered art sculpture, I still enjoy painting, especially scenes from our farm. Another piece I am featuring is a painting of corn (close up) called 'No GMO!' Over 85% of the corn produced in the US is genetically modified, most by adding genes from a bacterium that produces bacterial proteins within the corn plant. While genetically modified corn is literally everywhere, consumers had no say in this decision, there is no mandatory labeling of GM products, and the long-term ecological and human health effects are unknown. Pretty scary stuff! The corn on our farm is not genetically modified, therefore, 'No GMO!' is both a statement and a protest."

"Because I came to my career as an artist relatively late in life, I usually include in my bio a comment about 'becoming the artist I always was.' I've been thinking lately, though, it might be more accurate to say, 'becoming the reclusive artist that I always was.' I find making art is an intensely personal, almost revelationary, experience. The act of capturing a tree's essence on paper seems to complete the communication began when we first met, and binds us together in an intimate relationship. I know it, and it knows me. And although I welcome visitors to my studio, the presence of others does become a distraction. This 'recluse suspicion' has been building for months, and I finally accepted its confirmation while on a hunting trip with my oldest daughter's husband and my youngest daughter's boyfriend. At a secluded cabin in northern New Hampshire, the young bucks set off each morning to track their trophies. I, too, set off with gun and ammo-- but more in case something stumbled across my path than the reverse. For more importantly, I carried my camera, sketch pad, and pencil, and my real hunt was for trees who wanted their stories told. The stillness of that area was beyond description and the hours spent there filled my soul in a way that chatter never has. One tree in particular called out to me, and I'm eager to continue our conversation-- and what better time than winter in Vermont to practice being a reclusive artist!"

"The world is changing and artists now have a wonderful new canvas to create on." Corliss has translated her realistic style in oils to the new technologies. Corliss got an iPad at Small Dog Electronics the day it came out and was the first artist in the world to display an iPad painting on the internet. The iPad is a mobile studio; artists can now create without the toxic paints and mediums they have used for centuries. Her favorite painting app on the iPad is ArtStudio.

"My motivation for painting is color-- to experience it, to experiment with it, and to use it as a tool to define form, create depth, and balance composition. I love contained forms and so use a lot of line to delineate and link the various element of a painting. Shadows also interest me-- the stark contrast between light and dark, and the characteristics of shadow that allow you to understand the object without its being present. My goal is not to paint representationally, but to simplify objects to the point where they become iconic, or almost 'super real.' This applies especially when I am painting flowers. However, whether or not my painting is objective or non-objective, I hope that the end result will be pleasing to the viewer and inspire at least a second look!"

Self-taught wildlife painter, Bob Eldridge grew up loving birds and mammals found in the wild, which remain at the center of many of his paintings. However, Bob also investigates with his paintbrush historical figures (Jesuit priests in the New World), as well as biographical imaginations (Abraham Brown for the Community Arts Project), and is especially interested in "how much one planned brush stroke can convey."

" I love working in classic black and white. Taking the impact of color away from an image breaks it down to the true tonal range and invokes a sense of depth and clarity. I find it intriguing to study a subject to find whether I can remove the color's emotional impact to achieve that elusive sense of wonder and depth, yet still inspire a profound connection to the viewer. I strive to make my prints come alive as much as possible without manipulating them on a computer, though I certainly appreciate those who do it well. I create art inside the camera on one frame. What you see is what I saw, not an illusion. "

Pat Murphy is an artist who has been involved with the AIR gallery since its beginning. Pat studied both in America and England, and works in primarily oils. The new works use ideas, songs, stories, and memories of people and places to create paintings that we might feel but not necessarily see. "It's a new approach for me. One that I've been trying to get at for years. I want to use personal and collective memories of small town America as a springboard for talking about our lives."

This last spring, I was thinking about putting in the garden --and am still thinking about it. I have done many landscapes of the mountain area and local scenes. Recently, it's more of an abstracted sketch. "

"My artwork is a distillation of nature....it's colors, textures, and even my own interpretation of the real thing! In this show, I am featuring some of my nature prints. These are one of a kind images using the actual plants to print from. By working with several plates (flat pieces of Plexiglass) I can create layers of various images of them overlaying the plants that have picked up the ink and using the negative space the plants have created to utilize the next color I print. "Born and raised in Vermont, I came to appreciate the wealth of beauty that surrounded me growing up. Encouraged by my father, I became interested in drawing at an early age. In oil painting, color, value, and brush stroke are so important because they set the mood for my painting and express what I want the viewer to see and experience. If I'm trying to capture a cold gray winter day, I want the viewer to feel the cold; if a hot summer day, I want the viewer to feel the heat."

Robin creates strange, dreamlike images using mixed media that tend to be unsettling. She works primarily in the black and white darkroom, but also incorporates other techniques including polaroid emulsion lifts and pen/ink drawings. She graduated from Bennington College in 2008 with a bachelor of arts with a strong focus in photography. Massey also studied in Florence during the summer of 2007. Robin lives in Northern Vermont where she works on her art.

Natalie has been painting in acrylics ince 1986 when she moved to Vermont. She prefers to paint on oversized and life-size canvases as well as trompe l'oiel murals on canvas...The images that inspire Natalie the most are usually local wildlife, landscapes, skyscapes, trees, ferns, flowers, people, and those moments in time that you know are limited to that very moment. Sometimes the images evolve and appear as the colors and dimensions start to define themselves.

"The year 2009 went by so fast it seems I was just featured. This year I am practicing what I have been teaching in the Blue Crayon. I draw something every day. I think shape and color or shades when I paint and draw. If I want a perfect image I will take a photograph. My latest interest is eyes. I have been drawing eyes in charcoal, dip pen and ink, pencil, pastels, and watercolor. They all are so different. My show will be a mishmash of work. I am not one to settle on a theme. Hope you enjoy."

COMMUNITY ARTS PROJECT

The Arts Project is nearly complete now. As I write this, the 64-page book is being laid out by Forrest Dunnavant, with plans to have it published in time for the public exhibit at the

Enosburg Opera House on April 3rd from 1-4PM.

All team members and their subjects will receive one free copy of the book-- the remaining copies will be for sale at a modest price. And the art work completed by all twenty-eight artists is now on display for the Month of March at the AIR Gallery.

Following is a brief description of each work in alphabetical order.

Alexis Kyriak, inspired by the Weed Family, paints Moon and Music. "In the painting, the music is embedded in the hills, representing the impact of the Weed's music on me; the sky is deep with the offering of that music-- the moon and the music keeping company with "

Alison Dezotelle and Kellee Maddox make a statue of Al Stirt in Al Stirt, a 15 inch high sculpey constructed from cotton, wool, wire, moss, and fungus. "This piece relects Al in his environment-- his love of the wilds and his beginnings as a bowl maker."

Ann Allen portrays the Howrigan Family in Sugaring With Three Generations of Howrigans, a 22x28 inch oil on canvas. "I chose to paint Mike in the woods gathering sap with the help of his horses and family to reflect on the generations of Howrigans working together to farm the land."

Barbara Colgrove imagines Melissa Burke's world in Earth Art hand formed clay tile. "This piece was inspired by a shared love of Vermont and its seasons, the earth, and how they shape the everyday lives of a farm family and one who works in clay. "

Becky Wright, influenced by William Curtin, constructs Sweet Pea, an 11 inch high, paper mache sculpture. "I chose to portray Bill's cat, Sweet Pea, because she was present at the interview and Bill has always loved cats and dogs. Sweet Pea is his latest cat rescued from the Humane Society."

Bob Eldridge, inspired by Abraham Brown paints Gotta Bite, a 13.5x23.5 inch acrylic on board. "During our interview with Mr. Abe Brown, his eyes lit up when we mentioned fishing as a youngster down at the Missisquoi River. I tried to portray that turn of the century feeling in my painting."

Charlotte Rosshandler portrays Olga Lermontov in It's All About the Dirt. "If you admire her gardens and farm at Raven Ridge, Olga is likely to deflect the compliment with her arms outstretched and say 'It's all about the dirt' and the goddesses who help her work...So much pleasure, so much reward, so much Olga! "

Corliss Blakely, inspired by the Judd Sisters, creates Legacy, a 12x16 inch oil on board of a blue pitcher.

Daniel Pattullo protrays McDermott Brothers Trucking in Way To Go Boys, a photograph collage from two eras. "The past and the present can be seen at McDermotts as the third generation continues the legacy of their father and grandfather. Here you see Stanley looking on proudly as Bubba looks out from the cab."

Deidra Root (Senior at EFHS) portrays Wayne Honaker in A Piece of Vermont, a 26x32 inch collage. "I was inspired by Wayne's interests and activities living in Enosburg Falls. I chose collage as a venue because this method allowed me to show the multiple interests and activities that her is involved with."

Jim Foote portrays Ruth Nichols in Ruth In Yellow, a 12x16 inch acrylic on clayboard. "I chose to do a portrait because of Ruth's strong presence when you are with her and I wanted to show a small part of who she is by surrounding her with things dear to her."

Jo Anne Wazny, influenced by Linda Eppley, creates They Turned onto Church Street, a 19x19 mixed media collage. "I tried to show that all the pieces fit together to tell a love story of Linda and Sam Eppley-- for each other, for their children, for their community, for art and music, and for all the critters they have rescued."

Karen T. Scheffler creates for Sandra Ferland, Alphonse Mucha's Night's Rest, a 42x17.5 inch stained glass piece. "One of Sandra's favorites by Mucha, ethereal and peaceful-- evocative of the balance for an energetic day."

Kathleen Patrick creates around John and Carolyn Whiting, The Whitings Redwork, a 23x23 inch quilt. "The precision of the redwork with its variety of pictures and symbols seems to encompass John and Carolyn Whiting's varied life."

Kitten Ellison, inspired by Julie LaCross, paints Food for Body and Soul, a 14x19 hand painted serving plate. "It was a natural choice to paint flowers and vegetables reflecting Julie's love of gardening and her commitment to help those in need."

Kristan Doolan, inspired by the Carpenters, paints Team of Blacks, an 18x24 watercolor. "The Carpenters' deep appreciation for quality animals let quite an impression on me. I wanted to reflect the beauty of these animals as seen during the daily chores in the barn. I imagine their eyes linger on this very view frequently. "

Lyna Lou Nordstrom creates for Suzanne Hull Parent the Opera House, a 15x20 inch monotype with mixed media. "Since Suzi Hull-Parent is the Managing Director of the Opera House in Enosburg, it was the logical subject for the artwork. It has also been a part of the cultural community since 1892, an important part of the life of Enosburg Falls."

Margaret Young, inspired by Annalou Kittell, creates Wisdom and Innocence. "Annalou is a rare and wonderful woman who exudes wisdom and innocence as well as youth and sagacity. The brightness of the flowers against her weathered door suggests her youthful demeanor and her wisdom."

Mary Reed, inspired by Deb and George Moskevitz, paints Victorian Christmas Carolers, a 16x20 oil on canvas. "I wanted to represent Christmas and the people in the community at the Moskevitzs' Victorian home. I tried to create a feeling of warmth around the people who have come together even on a cold winter night."

Nancy Hayden, inspired by Earleen Bosley, constructs The Garden Book. "This is an altered art book modified with fabric and found plant material. This piece was inspired by the school gardens at Enosburg Falls Elementary School organized and managed by Earleen Bosley."

Nancy Hayden, inspired by Janice Geraw, constructs Cotton Sox. "Made from found objects, this piece was inspired by the stories provided by Janice Geraw and artifacts at the Historical Museum in Enosburg Falls. I was particularly interested in activities by the regular folks (the so-called Cotton Sox)."

Natalie LaRocque-Bouchard, insired by Martha and Jay Shepherd, paints The Jay Range acrylic on canvas. "The view may change but the mountain remains. This view means so much to both Martha and Jay and I wanted to capture it on canvas and share this beauty with them."

Pamela Krout-Voss and JoAnne Wazny, inspired by Hildred Tatro, construct Biography, an 8x8x8 inch book and mixed media piece. "Everyone associates Hildred with the library. We wanted to celebrate this contribution but also to bring in some of her many other interests, such as family, music, doll-house construction, and quilting."

Patrick Murphy paints Mark LaRose in Mark LaRose, a 24x24 inch oil on canvas. "When you go into LaRose's gas station between 7:30 and 8:00 AM you can usually ind Mark reading the newspaper. I felt this captured him perfectly."

Rebecca Anne Bennett portrays Michael Manahan in Michael and Bailey, an acrylic on canvas. "Bailey was Mike's best friend and companion. Where ever you saw one you saw the other."

Sandra Beval (Senior at EFHS) portrays Danielle LaRose in Passions of Danielle a 16x20 oil pastel painting. "My work was inspired by Danielle's interest in dancing, her love for singing and music, and her passion for basketball."

Sharon Fiske, inspired by Barbara Hayes, paints Opera House 1892, oil on canvas. "This painting is dedicated to Barbara, former president of the Opera House who worked diligently to preserve one of the few remaining historical opera houses left in Vermont today."

Toby Fulwiler inspired by the Wright Family, turns Sugar Maple Bowls with Tap and Ant Holes from maple. "Carroll Wright selected this wood from a culled maple in the family sugar bush: the tap holes and tap staings a reminder of the human connection to the land, the worm holes a reminder that for all things there is a season."
